Padres sign a record, creating MLB history.

By agreeing to a $5.6 million contract with foreign catcher Ethan Salas, the San Diego Padres have created MLB history.

With San Diego, Salas, a Venezuelan native, has now signed the richest international deal in league history.

Salas cost the Padres almost all of their $5.8 in foreign spending money as they entered the free agency era.

According to MLB Pipeline, Salas is the top international prospect overall. Jon Heyman of the New York Post broke the news of his signing first.

There aren't many official statistics on Salas because he is only 16 years old. The catcher, though, was identified by Pipeline as having significant MLB potential.

The Padres believe he may transform their team if he makes it to the major leagues. And in order to do so, they were prepared to pay a new MLB record.
